"WARNING!!! DO NOT BUY THIS TV!" 2010-02-19
By Kristina Evans
These TVs will last as little as 8 months. I bought a 42 inch 720p from Amazon in April of 2008. Within 10 months, the TV developed a solid line down the left side - LCD panel was shot. Even with the TV under warranty, I had difficulties with Toshiba to even get them to send someone to my house to address the issue, terrible customer service! After almost two months and the inability of Toshiba to supply enough replacement parts to their service s to meet demand (because so many customers LCDs were going bad) they finally did the right thing and got me this model as a replacement. That was in March of 2009. Now after only 11 months, the brand new TV will not even turn on. My warranty expired because it was a replacement and only lasted 1 year from the original purchase date of the first TV. If you think I'm over reacting, please google on ["Toshiba LCD" "Yellow LED" flashes 3 times]. The repair bill costs up to $800. Toshiba does not acknowledge that they have a quality issue with these TVs and refuses to help their victims. I believe there may be a class action suit in the works.

And oh yeah, I bought a toshiba DVD player only 14 months ago, and it is already acting up. I will never buy another Toshiba product. DO NOT CONTINUE TO ENCOURAGE MANUFACTURERS to CONTINUE THIS TYPE OF BEHAVIOR by GIVING THEM YOUR MONEY!

"Great TV for the money" 2009-06-29

TOSHIBA 42RV535U LCD

I bought this TV from Amazon.com. The delivery company was great.

I got this TV about six months ago and it has been performing great since I installed it.

Since I purchased the Toshiba, I bought a Samsung 120Hz for another room. The Samsung certainly has a superior picture, but not for twice the price. If you're not hung-up on 120Hz, I think this is an equal. I think I like the user controls on the Toshiba better than the Samsung.

I dont't think you can go wrong with this TV...

"Research this dog on the net and DON'T BUY It!" 2009-06-14
By PenMangler (alabama, US of A)
I bought this tv from a retailer. 14 months later, the tv would not return to ready after a SHORT power outage. The yellow standby light just blinked three times over and over. The manual said this was normal and when it was ready to start it would go to a green light. No it wouldn't. Manual and Toshiba site said to hold the power button on the cabinet in for five seconds and it would reset it. This worked...twice. The Toshiba site said unplug it for an hour. This worked...once. Now at 18 months, a short power outage from a summer storm knocked it back to the yellow lights. After four days, it is still blinking yellow. I tried every trick I could find short of putting socks and shoes on it. I found this is a common problem with this model. The store will evaluate the problem for $189. The repair to the board that has gone south is $600 parts and labor. Again, I am not the only victim of this shoddy equipment. Toshiba basically told me they weren't concerned with it since it's out of warranty. So, research the model on the net and see for youself. If you have one of these, be scanning the ads for a new tv soon, it will fail. Toshiba says they won't order a recall since the model has been replaced with this new one you're looking at now. The new one has the same boards. $1300 dollars for 18 months service.

I'm the type of person who does research before I make a large purchase; I go to a store and see products in person then I get on the Internet and read the reviews. That is why I am so happy with my new REGZA TV. The color is beautiful and, even though I don't have an HD receiver, the picture is very clear. It is also user friendly.

"Dont look any further buy this model" 2009-04-22
By John W. Utter
I buy and sell tv's part time outside my day job. So over the last 10 years I have seen a large number of good and bad models. First I rate the following brands as my top 5 starting with the best at the top. Samsung, Hitachi, Soney, Toshibia, JVC. Now JVC can take a big jump to the top here and there with some of there price deals. Anyway I purchased the Toshibia. For the money, the features and the quality you can not go wrong. Did you know 2/3 service calls for lcd tv's are for Visio. Be aware also that 2/3 service calls for lcd tv's in ANY brand are for power related issues. This happens to any tv of any brand, so a review that says the power went out after x ammount of time is simply not a fair review. In fact to since I repair Tv's as well I can tell you that Power fluctuations such as "Browning effect" will ruin any tv no matter what brand you stick in your home. Anyway this TV model is one of the best out there. 120hz, great picture and fab HD. Did you know that Toshibia TV's upconvert regular analog signal? This is one of the few tvs that attempt to do this all the time. Most DVD HD or Blue ray players will do this , but this tv does that on your cable signal. To be fair almost all hd tvs will do 1080i signal. This is a great buy

Even in a brightly-lit room, patented Ultra Filter Bright keeps the pictures looking clearer in details and deeper in black at every angle. Samsung's powerful anti-burn-in technology assures a long screen life. The 15,000:1 contrast ratio lets you see every nuance, even in nighttime action. Advanced plasma picture technology delivers sharper screen text, while eliminating "noise." Dynamic SRS Tru Surround XT produces theater-quality sound. Connect your digital devices through three HDMI ports, one on the side, and a full complement of audio and video inputs, including USB 2.0. And control all your CEC-compliant digital devices through the one HP-T4264 remote. And it's Energy Star Compliant, so you'll use less energy.

Amazon.com Product Description

Offering a rich feature set and exceptional quality for its price, Samsung HPT4264 42-inch 720p plasma TV uses the company's latest DNIe enhancement circuitry to deliver outstanding brightness, contrast, and image clarity. Use it for home theater and use it for your PC--it's perfect for both. In addition to a standard-broadcast NTSC tuner, it also features an integrated ATSC tuner that can capture over-the-air digital broadcasts from local network affiliates (the set will still require a set-top tuner for receiving non-terrestrial HD broadcasts from channels like HBO or Discovery). Other noteworthy features include a 60,000 hour panel life, Samsung's unique auto pixel-shifting technology to prevent burn-in, a gaming mode, cinema progressive film mode, and 3 HDMI connections. This model is also compatible with an Auto wall-mount Samsung will release this year that is controllable in 3-dimensions via the HTDV's own remote control.

Samsung currently offers two 42-inch 720p plasma models; this one and the lower priced HPT4254. this model is set apart from the HPT 4254 by its cosmetic design and by the inclusion of a USB 2.0 connection for playing photo files or MP3s. Both models offer the same high level of digital image processing, 15,000:1 contrast ratio, and HDMI connectivity. If you don't need the USB connection, you may want ot consider the the HPT4254.

The Samsung Digital Natural Image engine (DNIe) Video Enhancer refines all analog NTSC and wideband video inputs for an overall improvement in picture quality. DNIe improves contrast, white level, picture detail and incorporates digital noise reduction to improve lower quality video inputs. Thanks to the new 13-bit processing capability of DNIe, the HP-S4253 can produce over 549 billion colors (compared to the one billion colors that TVs with 10-bit processing can produce.

Single-tuner Picture in Picture
This HDTV has a picture-in-picture feature, but it only has a single tuner which does not allow POP to function n the same mode. For example, you can't watch one TV channel in the main screen and another channel in the PIP screen. You can watch a tv channel in one screen and view contnet from your computer or a DVD in another. This tends to be the functional limitation of PIP in most HDTVs currently available.

"Good tv right before it completely broke" 2010-01-18
By D. Wojtkowski (San Diego, CA)
After reading all the reviews we bought this tv for $1000 in Aug07. Worked great (except for a few HDMI issues with Time Warner's DVR) - nice picture, okay sound, right up until one day, out of the blue the video just stopped. It's never had any damage - never even been moved. TV Repair said the main board was bad - common problem with these tvs. It was 2 years and 2 months from the date we bought it. Samsung was completely unreasonable - asked them just to cover the parts and we would pay the labor as this is a known problem - no luck.

Good tv but very bad reliability. I wouldn't buy one unless you have a 5+ year warranty.

"I severely damaged my hand during installation, BE CAREFUL!" 2009-12-26
By Joseph Mahoney (Philadelphia, PA)
I bought this TV for my mother as a holiday gift. She is 67 years old and needed assistance in setting it up; to which I was much obliged to do. While I was lowering the TV onto the stand the TV slipped off of the stand and very nearly sliced open my finger to the bone. Suffice to say it ruined our holiday, and I guarantee that if my hand met such a misfortune that there are other people that have suffered my same fate.

The back of the TV has a thin steel frame that hugs the top part of the mounting, the steel is so thin that if it is dropped on your hand be prepared for instant gouging.

It is a good TV as far as the picture, however the unit itself was not designed with safety in mind. I have a 52 inch LCD Sony Bravia that was lighter to carry and easier to lower onto the stand, and has a better picture.

I am hoping that my finger heals quickly; for those with the spirit of adventure feel free to look at the photos of my incident. Best of luck to all!

 "Great TV" 2009-02-08
By USA (Grimes, IA USA)
Have had it about a year with no problems. I'm not a huge TV buff, but i think the picture and sound are great! The only thing i can think of that i don't like is the response time for changing channels with the remote. Small issue i know. Otherwise i am very happy with it!

 "No regrets!" 2008-05-02
By Ashley Q. Parks
This TV is awesome! I've never had any problems with it and the picture it delivers is flawless! I have played DVD's on it, watched HDTV with an antenna, and play computer games with it and it work great for each scenario. I have recommended this TV to everyone I know. I did a lot of research before I purchased this TV because I did not know if I wanted to get this one or a Sony. But I have no regrets now that I have bought this one!

 "Great TV" 2008-04-14
By Ned B. Palmer (Naples, FL USA)
I have owned this tv for over half a year and I love the set. The picture is second to none and the quality of the product is great. The only thing that I have an issue with is the remote that comes with the tv. It does not allow me to control my TIVO dvr and there are certain functions that I am unable to perform when controlling my digital cable box. However, I would buy this tv over any other that I have experienced, it continually impresses me.

 "Samsung 42-inch plasma TV" 2010-02-03
By B. Mann Jr. (Dunstable, MA United States)
Great TV! Arrived quickly. Looks great, wonderful picture (720p is eye-popping), adequate sound from the built-in speakers, swivels generously on the included stand. Like other plasma TVs, it does generate a fair amount of heat, but in the cold Northeast this time of year, that's a bonus.

"Great TV, I love it!" 2009-12-21
By WRP
I did all sorts of research on the internet for weeks before I purchased this TV. I have had this TV since 2007 and I couldn't have made a better choice for me. The colors are stunning and the audio is great. The only thing that I didn't take into consideration was the possibility of burn ins. I once left a DVD menu on and fell asleep. 8 hours later I woke up and was freaking out. I ran the wipe out mode while I was at work for 8 1/2 hours and when I came back, there was no burn in. Occasionally if you have a channel on the logo might appear on the screen slightly when you turn off the tv, but it's nothing to worry about, it goes away, trust me, I watch A TON of tv shows and movies. I also have HDMI out from my computer to my TV and it looks awesome, never had a problem with burn ins in that area either. Overall, I'd recommend this TV to anyone, honestly. Don't freak out about burn ins if that is your main worry, the picture quality is so much better than DLP and LCD in my opinion, it's totally worth it.

"Went off exactly after one year" 2008-11-29
By V. Sankaran
I bought this TV last August from Best Buy and two days before it went off. I hear a click sound when I turn on, but nothing comes up. I even use a surge protector power supply.

I used to have TVs lasting more than 20 years, but I am surprised to see this Big Brand TV going off in just one year. Unfortunately, I didnt buy the extended warranty. The charges towards fixing this issue seems to be around 40% of TV cost. I called up Samsung also if they can help with my problem. They told the same story what Best Buy told me, that fix up an appointment with technical engineer and I need to bear the whole cost, as I am out of Warranty. But they keep their mouth shout, when I ask why did this fault happen.

So Beware of this problem, before buying this TV. I am totally disappointed with purchasing this TV.

 "Absolutely Beautiful" 2008-10-14
By E. Scott Rudicil (Los Angeles, CA)
I've owned this set for about 10 months now, and it never ceases to amaze me with its picture and ease of use. Simply put, it's an outstanding HDTV, especially for the price.

The color is what strikes me first. It's drastically better than almost every LCD set I've come across that's been below $3,000. In general, plasma tv's produce better color output than LCD's, so that in and of itself isn't really surprising. What IS surprising, though, is just how much more vivid a picture this set has than almost all LCD's and plasmas anywhere remotely in and out of its price range. My dad paid twice as much for his 40" LCD 1080p, and all he does is comment on how pretty my tv looks everytime he comes over. Same with a close friend of mine who also owns an LCD that cost more than twice as much. I never realized how beautiful reds, yellows, blues, and greens were until I got this set. Yellow has become my new favorite color, strangely enough, because it looks so bloody brilliant on this set. Bumblebee from Transformers blows my mind every time I watch it. It's absolutely beautiful.

In terms of clarity, it's again a stunning product. Blu-Rays shine on this set, and I'm constantly showing off Transformers and Planet Earth to the delight of my friends. Also, the contrast on this plasma outshines any and all LCD screens I've tried out, too.

I can't comment on the sound because I use my surround sound set-up at all times, but the three or four times I've utilized the factory speakers, they've been fine.

My only major gripe is that the factory remote doesn't have preset buttons for each of the input selections. There's only one button, and you have to cycle through the input types until you reach your desired destination. I ended up purchasing the Harmony One remote which already has those inputs programmed in. Sweet!

The only other concern I have had is screen burn-in, which has happened on occasion. I'm fairly mindful of it and whatever burn-in my tv has received has always worn off after an hour or so, but I imagine if you play video games with HUDs on them for many many hours at a time, this could become an issue. I haven't had any problems with my games (all three of the "next gen" systems look and play great on this thing), but I am not as hardcore a gamer as I used to be.

Overall, this set is dynamically beautiful, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone looking for a fantastic picture that will wow you and your friends and family for years to come.

 "Love it" 2008-07-20
By Shawn A. Hawkins (Chicago, IL)
After reviewing many TVs, I decided to go with this one. I've had it for 4 months now and love it.

One bit of advice for those about to break into the HD world. When we first plugged in the TV, I thought I did something wrong because the picture didn't take up the entire screen area. What I found out later is that non-HD channels only display in a portion of the screen. I wish there were more HD channels to display on this great TV.

"Screen broke for no reason after a year!" 2010-01-29
By M. L. Jones (Ohio)
We purchased the TV brand new from our local electronics store.

After owning the TV approximately eighteen months, we awoke one morning to find the inner screen shattered. Nobody had touched it during the night and it was perfectly fine the night before.

The extended warranty we had purchased for the TV was useless as the warranty company refused to fix the TV because they said we must have abused the TV.

So, we wasted almost $2000 for a television that lasted a year and a half.

We will never buy another Panasonic TV or LCD TV. We went with plasma for the replacement television.

This is a really good TV. But buy a newer one. This on was made in 2007. And now we have 2010.

Ours is 2 years old and has had a dark line down the middle for about a year. Now it has one on either side of the screen, too, and the one in the middle is getting darker.

Well defined picture in HD, very useful and convenient remote especially with cable service. Toddler has touched screen and left marks we are unable to remove- tough to clean screen.

 "Love It." 2008-12-28
By Computer dad
Bought this in December 2007, and it was money well spent. My wife wanted to upgrade from our 35" tube. I was reluctant, but am happy I went along. I had seen LCDs at friends and relatives houses, and was convinced that they were not that much better than what we had. Well they definately didn't have this.

The picture quality on the HD chanels is amazing. My wife, who does not watch sports, will watch now just to see the picture.

The sound is a little worse than what we had in our tube TV, but I knew that going in. If I want realy good sound, for a movie or music, I run it through our surround sound and its all good.

If you can find one of these at a discount for its age, you will not be dissapointed.

"After two years, mine just broke as well" 2010-02-01
By Steven Lee (ny)
Bought this in Feb 2008 and worked fabulously until last week. Other than the amount of heat it put out, I felt that this was close to a top of the line plasma.

I used all of cnet's suggested settings depending on whether I was watching television (cable box attached via HDMI) or movies/playing games (60G PS3 attached via HDMI) and it performed well.

Last week the screen went red on startup, whether there were no inputs plugged in or not. With a signal from either the cable or PS3 the images were severly solarized red. I did my research, thought it might be one of the control panels or lvds cable (big difference in replacement price) and called panasonic. Since I'm off warranty and this is not a known problem, they directed me to authorized technicians.

So I called geek squad. Geek squad thought it might be the digital board, but of course over the phone it's impossible to give an accurate diagnosis. Estimated repair costs would be $500 at least and two visits.

The main problem with this for me is that even with the diagnosis, it's mostly a guess. Geek squad can swap out the board, but if that doesn't do it, you're paying for another part and another visit and (more importantly) more time I should be at work and not taking a day off to deal with this.

With that analysis, I went straight to best buy's website. They have a recycling program to pick up your old television and recycle it responsibly. Bought myself a samsung un40b6000 and told myself the smaller carbon footprint is worth the less than optimal viewing at an angle.

 "good while it lasts" 2009-11-01
By F. Celestina
though one pixel did die on my set about a year ago the picture quality is amazing...while it lasts. i just had it turn off on me after almost two years and now i find that it won't turn back on unless i spend 300 dollars to repair it.

 "10 Flashing Lights" 2009-09-23
By Kurosh Nahavandi (MI USA)
Was a superb TV for about 10 months, or yesterday, when all of a sudden the TV turned off - 10 light flashes and repeats -- After searching, it's not looking good. Fortunately it looks like I may still be under warranty - however, this seems to be a systemic problem, and it breaks my heart knowing I've vouched so highly for this set.

Hopefully I'm treated well with service and the problem is fixed in a short manner.

Oh well.

"it broke 2 months out of warranty." 2009-09-02
By Janeen Benevent
Had this TV for 14 months and now its dead. Panasonic won't help, this is a common problem with the TV

 "mine just broke..." 2008-12-20
By Juan Stampino (Iraq)
ive had this tv for a little over a year now. i watch it almost every day for an hour two at night. just a few days ago it stopped turning on. the right light blinks a few times but no screen or sound. ive been researching the problem to find it is a common problem in this tv... many breaking before or at the one year mark. its apparently and overheating problem that this model has. i would not recommend buying this tv unless you want to risk a broken tv after only one year of use.

Amazing color reproduction

The incredible black reproduction of a Panasonic High-Definition Plasma TV results in impressive contrast and beautiful, natural colors. So you'll get warm, accurate skin tones, gorgeous greens, breathtaking blues and vivid reds. For color that's as rich and bold as life itself, look to a Panasonic Plasma TV.

Consistent brightness from any angle

A Panasonic Plasma combines anti-glare and anti-reflection technology with the natural light-emitting properties of plasma, to give you a super-wide viewing range with a crisp, beautiful image from almost any angle.

Smooth, graceful motion

When you're watching sports or movies with fast-motion graphics, you want a TV that can keep up with the action. With over 900 lines of moving picture, self-illuminating plasma displays eliminate afterimages in fast-action scenes. So whether you're watching a sporting event or an action-packed movie, you'll always get the most impressive viewing experience possible.

1,000,000:1 Contrast

The Panasonic's Real Black system (a pre-discharge suppression system) and improved panel production processes combine to reproduce outstanding blacks with superb contrast. Each image is richly expressive, from bright scense, like scorching desert landscapes, to dark cave scenes. Compare the image produced by conventional HDTV on the left to the Real Black image produced on the right

More Colors

Viera HDTVs support the xvYCC color profile (Extended YCC Colorimetry for Video Applications), or "x.v. color" for short. Standard RGB color space allows the display of a portion of the colors that are viewable to the human eye. The next generation "xvYCC" color space actually offers  an available range of colors that exceeds what human eyes can recognize.
  • Next-generation "xvYCC" color space supports 1.8 times as many colors as existing HDTV signals
  • Lets HDTVs display colors more accurately
  • Enables displays with more natural and vivid colors

Deep Color

deep color eliminates visible color banding Where x.v. color expands the available range of colors your HDTV can display, Deep Color increases the number of colors your HDTV can display within that range, for smoother transitions from color to color.
  • Lets HDTVs and other displays go from millions of colors to billions of colors
  • Eliminates on-screen color banding, for smooth tonal transitions and subtle gradations between colors
  • Enables increased contrast ratio
  • Can represent many times more shades of gray between black and white.

Connectivity

Viera flat panel HDTVs interact with an array of high-definition devices and services, making it easy for consumers to access and enjoy content as never before. As of 2008, Viera Link is compatible with Onkyo and Yamaha home theater systems.
Videos and stills recorded on SD cards can easily be viewed via the SD slots on Panasonic Blu-Ray Disc players and Viera HDTVs. Viera Link means easy connectivity via HDMI cables. Finally, consumers can easily operate their Blu-Ray Disc players, DVD recorders and home theater systems with a single remote control device.
SD Cards Viera Link

4 HDMI inputs to connect all of your devices directly to your television. Equipped with an RGB input terminal, VIERA can connect with your PC and serve as a large-screen monitor.
Easy connectivity with HDMI ports pc input

Long Life

long life Panasonic plasma panels are rated to last 100,000 hours, which is about 30 years of regular or 11 years of non-stop usage before the brightness of the display is halved.

Get Full HD with Blu-Ray Disc Players

Blu-Ray disc player A Panasonic 1080p plasma television is able to render 1920x1080 pixels, but standard DVDs have a resolution of just 720x480. Blu-ray discs output true 1080p High-Definition resolution and have a storage capacity ten times greater than standard DVDs, so no pixel gos to waste.

"Stop shopping and BUY it." 2009-10-06
By A. Malin (OK)
I did a bunch of research, not just on line, and settled on this TV and I'm very happy with it. It did fail while under warranty but Panasonic sent a guy out to fix it in a hurry. Well done.

 "disappointing quality" 2009-10-04
By Robert Hughes (Post Falls, Idaho, USA)
In the old days when you paid a premium for electronic up-grades, your quality increased.

(for example: a diamond stylus on a Panasonic turntable eliminated all hissing; a big Panasonic reel-to-reel tape player out-performed cassette and 8-track tape-players).

Today this is no longer the case:

HD and LCD big screen TVs are steps down in quality!

All picture formats are rotten:

The "4:3" ratio reduces the wide screen display to normal width leaving 1/4 of the sides blank.

"Zoom" cuts off the peripheries -- the tops of heads--and sport box scores.

"Full" squishes everyone fat, squatty and short.

"Just" blows everybody in all directions--everything is stretched out of proportion.

If I want a normal view I go to the bedroom and watch my old Panasonic.

Digital High Definition sound quality has taken a hit, too.

Digital sound breaks up regularly (and I've got cable). Try to listen to classical music on PBS--like "Live at Lincoln Center" and during the quiet passages the digits break and interrupt the whole piece.

I'm a loyal Panasonic buyer.

But within a year I've lost audio on 4 channels, including ABC.

This whole (forced) move to HD is a real bummer.

Maybe the next technological "improvement" will be BH ("Black Hole" TV where the consumer and all his/her money is sucked in and disintegrated.)

 "FANTASTIC!" 2009-04-15

"Phosphor Trails: Scourge of the Plasma" 2009-02-26
By John Smith
In October, I purchased a Panasonic Viera TH-42PZ85U Plasma Television from Amazon. One of the caveats about owning an HDTV is that it requires quite a bit of time to tweak picture settings in order to ensure that your TV is giving you the best possible picture. In the proceeding months, I've fiddled with the various settings, like color, contrast, brightness, and even used a THX calibration disc and blue filter glasses in order to calibrate my set for optimal viewing from all of my sources (FiOS, DVD, PS3/Blu-Ray, DVR, Xbox). Overall, I've been quite happy with my Panny.

However, in recent months, I've noticed a very disturbing and annoying trend occuring in my TV: phosphor trails. These are green or blue trails that are left behind a moving object in a high contrast scenario. It occurs, as I understand it, because plasma pixels cannot shift directly from black to white, or vice versa. They have a brief green or blue phase in between. An example of this might be a hockey game that has players with dark jerseys on a white ice background. This scenario is plagued by phosphor trails on my TV. The players leave streaks as they move across the rink. I love hockey, and this is a major issue for me. Another example might be a movie or TV show where a person with light skin is moving through a dark room. This scenario is even worse for me. Light objects on dark background leave horrible green trails and are physically taxing on my eyes. Video games often have high contrast scenarios like this, and this effect is present in many that I own.

Unfortunately, I don't have a video camera capable of accurately depicting this phenomenon. On the cheap point-n-shoot I have, the effect is far worse than it appears in person. Nevertheless, I'm very close to selling my TV, cutting my losses and getting a Samsung LN46A650 LCD. I know that I may just be trading one issue for another, as LCD's have problems of their own, but I've just about had it. If a representative from Panasonic or Amazon is reading this, please contact me, as I would love to remedy this somehow.
