"Excellent Sony 27 inch Stereo Color TV" 2001-08-06
By gobirds2 (New England)
This is a good set from SONY. It has a Digital comb filter that increases picture resolution and reduces noticeable dot-crawl, which is visible on less expensive 27inch brands. It has Rear audio and composite video inputs as well as an S-video input for DVD, Laser Disc players and Super-VHS recorders for higher picture resolution. It also has XDS, which has become a standard feature of late on better TVs. XDS receives information that some broadcasters are sending with their signals. It also comes standard with Clock, Sleep Timer, Channel Jump, Remote and V-chip. I just saw this set this weekend with a satellite signal and DVD demo. It looked very good.

 "Bad experience" 2009-01-26
By crayfish (Burlington, VT United States)
We thought we were getting a good deal with this LCD TV - it was refurbished and therefore well priced, but we paid an extra $200 for an extended warranty, which was to kick in after the Westinghouse 90-day warranty expired. Within the first week the remote control started acting up, and within two weeks the set wouldn't turn on at all. We had to send it back to Westinghouse *at our expense* ($120) -- that's their policy (and the extended warranty hadn't kicked in yet). About seven weeks later (?!) the new set arrived. We're unpacking now, but not too excited.

The set itself is OK, though when you change channels, there's a half-second glitch that gets pretty annoying.

 "Love this TV" 2008-11-10
By Cynthia W. Dunigan
I originally got a Samsung LCD from Amazon but returned it because of rebate issue. There is alot of light in my family room and I couldn't watch the Samsung in the daytime unless I sat on floor.

This TV was for sale at Costco. It is great, can watch anytime of day from any direction. The HD pictures is good and there are lots of different adjustments you can make for picture quality. Unlike the Samsung, you can scan of Digital TV only over the air.

Great TV.

 "Seems to work well" 2008-05-08
By Garrett Cook (Knoxville, TN)
We purchased eight of these for our company to use as large informational displays. They seem to work alright, and have all the inputs that we need. In our case it's actually a benefit that they don't come with tuners, that way we're not paying for something we're probably not allowed to use here. Seems to do a good job of up-sampling, but not all resolutions (especially those larger than 1366x768) seem to be able to be displayed.

Only reason it's not five stars is that it would be nice if the unit would turn on automatically when it receives VGA input.

 "Very satisfied" 2010-01-17
By Paul J. Perkins (Lebanon, KY United States)
I've had this television for a year, and have had no problems with it.

I'm pleased with the image quality.

It has a USB port on the side that you can plug a flash drive (thumb drive) into and view JPG pictures. I've done this a few times and it a neat way to show off your photos.

JVC LT42X579 42-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV

This TV costs less than other TV's with similar features. What I learned before I went out to purchase a TV of this type was make sure it is 1080p and that it is full HDTV. This TV has both these things. It also has so many features to numerous to list here. The most important thing for me is the picture quality and this TV blew me away. I am so happy with my purchase of this TV I just had to let people know that they do not need to spend a lot of money to get a top quality TV. Don't disregard this TV when making your decision as to what brand TV to buy. I took the extra money and purchased a top quality "Surge Protector". Oh, also, I didn't need to buy the HDTV cable that can be very expensive. My cable company gave me the cable for free. So you may want to check it out before you buy the cable. Hope this has been some help as I am far from an expert on these TV's.

"My Fault: Should Have known Better!!!!!!!" 2009-02-11
By G Word (Maryland)
DO NOT! REPEAT; DO NOT BUY THIS TV!! I own several large screen LCD TVs all within the $1500 - $1800 range. This TV is no comparison to their picture quality or any other performance category. I bought this TV because of the low price and placed it in a room that is seldom used for TV viewing so high picture quality was not the objective. However, any TV should at least be reliable regardless of price. After 4 months of very infrequent use, the TV simply would no longer turn on. Although frustrating, matters became horrible when dealing and negotiating with the Westinghouse Contact Center for repair services. Without going into the ugly details, all I can say is that it took me THREE MONTHS to finally get Westinghouse to stand behind their product. Ultimately I substituted the TV during this ordeal and realized that I should have made the alternative competitive purchase (only for $180 more) in the first place. I can't tell you how upseting it is/was to learn later that almost everybody had the same problem, in otherwords a manufactured defect associated with the powersave mode. The bottomline is that this is a "low budget" TV; "Low Quality" Picture; and "Low Quality" Service. There are too many good LCD TV alternatives in this price range and for a little more money, substantially better products in all measureable categories. If the picture quality or anything else were better, I would at least say that it might be worth the try as an entry level LCD TV set. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY. I am not saying this to be mean, but Westinghouse should be ashamed of itself!

"Get what you pay for: decent TV for a decent price" 2008-12-29
By Steven M. Perry
I've had this TV for over a year now and it has been a fine TV during most of that time. This is a quick, simple review of my experience with it:

Pros:

-It's hard to get a large 1080p picture for much less. The value is very good. This was my first HDTV and I could only grin when I first saw a good 1080p signal on it. Its an incredible leap from analog cable.

-Allows for full appreciation of Blu-ray. This media is so much better than DVD for video quality. Suggestion: Do not buy Blu-ray discs, but rent from Blockbuster or Netflix.

-Simple to set up with easy menu navigation and fairly expansive settings

-Performance surpasses its price

-Built in tuners are very capable. Over the air 1080p looks great.

-Very good 480i scaling. It makes the difference between analog and digital 480i cable almost unnoticeable.

-Many inputs. My roommate and I have quite a few game systems and the 4 HDMI inputs have been very useful.

-Built in sound system is good, but will eventually develop vibrations.

Cons:

-Experiences PS3 flickering over HDMI (See below)

-Poor black levels: must decide between dark blacks with bad shadow definition -or- good shadow definition and gradient with noticeably light blacks

-Poor scaling of 480p signal. My Wii looks better on 480i than 480p settings.

-Slight shadowing of 1080p VGA signal. Remedied by using DVI output from PC to VGA converter.

-The settings for all of the HDMI inputs are linked. You can set specific video settings for all the different inputs except the HDMI inputs, which all must have the same settings. Changing the brightness for one changes it for all of them, for instance.

Issues:

-It looked much better after adjusting the settings at home than it did in the store; set the sharpness up to 70 or 80, for instance.

-Slight Audio-Visual lag at times. I can't reproduce the pattern, but sometimes the voice will come significantly before the movement of the actor's mouth. This is especially detrimental in fast-reaction based games.

-My PS3 connected via HDMI would flicker. The signal would go in and out, which was very disconcerting during a climactic action scene on a 1080p blu-ray. This problem was especially prevalent on 720p signals. THIS HAS SINCE SUBSIDED AND DOES NOT HAPPEN ANYMORE. I'm not sure why.

-Recently, my set has experience significant red "snow" or fuzz in dark areas with distortion of whites or light grays. I luckily bought the set with a credit card that provides an extended warranty, but otherwise I would be out of luck. It makes some media almost unwatchable. This has been a major problem and will require repairs. Note that this issue arose less than 2 years into the life of the set.

-I attempted to update my firmware and this process was impossibly difficult. The site does not let you download by mouse click, but instead requires that you input your serial number. It tells my mine is invalid. Westinghouse phone support is of no help in this matter.

Overall:

This far after the purchase, I can say that I would only recommend this set if you are absolutely dying to have an HDTV and are feeling very light in the checkbook, like I was. I would not buy a 720p TV ever, but this is the bare minimum for a 1080p set. If you're going to spend the $[...], go ahead and spend the extra few hundred for a better set, especially with deeper blacks. It will bother you if you're in a dark room watching a nighttime scene in a movie and the night sky looks like a dull gray light filling the room. Also, things like black suits and hair lose their definition on this set. I have had numerous issues with the set and am now having it repaired a year and a half after buying it. Like I said, this set made me smile when I first had 1080p video and games on it, but the problems and shortcomings make me wish I had spent just a little more.

UPDATE (10/3/09):

I wanted to love this TV. It was my first HDTV. I bought it in my third year of college with three roommates putting in $[...] each to help. Coming from standard definition CRT and rear projection sets, this set looked pretty good. The blacks were fairly crushed, and shadows in scenes looked uniformly gray. But 1080p was very impressive, and as I've used it extensively for game playing, the high resolution has been great with my PS3 and my roommates 360.

HOWEVER, when I spend $[...] on a piece of electronics, I expect it to serve its purpose for more than a year and a half, which this set did not. I purchased the set in August of 2007, and in November 2008, it began to exhibit very bad color distortion and red "static" or "snow" in dark areas. I spent quite some time adjusting the picture settings to make it watchable, but it was simply miserable to look at. Luckily, I purchased a 2 year third party warranty with the set, and am currently in what's been a 3 month long warranty repair process. Evidently, the main data board is in need of repair (a $[...] part).

Mind you, the set is failing after less than a year and a half of moderate daily use. This comes in addition to the various problems common with this set (dropping of input signals, failure to pick up input from the PS3, losing signal when changing resolutions, vibration of TV cabinet with speakers), all of which I have experienced. Do not buy this TV. You can purchase a much better set for only a few hundred dollars more. Had I had a little more wisdom under my belt, I would have done the same.

I cannot recommend this set to any prospective buyer. For more information, read the AVSforum owner's thread:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=851860&page=182

While the price is tempting (I've seen it as low as $[...]), this set experiences a major failure after around 18 months. In my opinion, a product recall or class action suit against Westinghouse is in order. That forum is filled with 200 pages of consumers who spent $[...] on a TV that last them less than 2 years, and that my friends borders on theft.

"Do you feel lucky, Punk?!?" 2008-12-22
By Thomas King (SC)
Great TV, IF you get one that stays working. Great sound, great picture, great tuner and inputs, great in most every respect. Spotty reliability, and pee poor service if you need warranty service. Get it cheap and get a 3rd party warranty and it'd be reasonable, just do not leave yourself at the mercy of Westinghouse.

After WH support saying that someone will call in 4-5 days, that plus a few and still no call. Then finally get through to the local service, and guess what? No action at all! "Well we have thousands of customers, and there's just me" says the receptionist. 2 or 3 weeks to get the part, after they order it too! Then just the one part WH phone support thinks it is, if they've guessed wrong and the power board happens to have taken out the other board or the screen I could literally be looking at months.

The set is almost wonderful! A percent or two on better engineering, a percent or two to go ahead and ship boards out when called for and 2nd day air etc and things would be fine. Instead they run a seriously mickey mouse repair method to save a few bucks, and guarantee that customers buy something else next time. WH management makes the Big 3 CEO's look like geniuses..

Got it at Costco, and fortunately after the warranty repair problems they took it back despite being outside the 90 day direct return period. If they hadn't been decent I'd have been screwed at least for weeks if not 2 or 3 months.

Great stuff if it stays working, but you'll be quite sorry if you get one of the bad ones. Costco stopped carrying a couple weeks after my purchase, they and several other retailers had a good price and sold them off 6 months ago. No need to wonder why.

"You get what you pay for" 2008-11-30
By Ace of Sevens (Cedar Rapids, IA USA)
I bought this back in May 2007 when it first came out because the death of my previous TV put me in a bind. Had I waited to see some more reviews, I probably would have purchased a different model. First the pros:

* Good price for a 1080p of this size.

* Sharp, bright image image. Seems to resolve pixel-for pixel on HDMI.

* Does 1080p over component, which is good for those of you with older Xbox 360s.

* Plenty of inputs.

* Digital and analog tuners use a single cable.

* No significant response-time problems

* Low weight and small footprint mean you can place this on many kinds of stands and movie it without too much difficulty.

Now the cons:

* Image brightness is a bit uneven, though not awful. The upper corners are a bit brighter than the rest.

* It crops 480p signals in wide mode about 5% each off top and bottom and less at the sides. This is true for both component and HDMI. High-def signals are framed correctly.

* HDMI is finnicky. My PS3 wouldn't be recognized at all for a while, then got so it would freqently blink out. Running the HDMI through a receiver resolved this, but it's something to keep in mind if connecting directly to the TV.

* Can't be calibrated quite correctly. I couldn't get color bars on spec no matter what I did, though it comes quite a bit closer than many cheaper TVs. I got red and blue close to right, though still visibly off, but it has a significant green push that can't be adjusted out.

* The TOSLINK out seems to down-mix everything to 2-channel. This means you can't watch HDTV in 5.1 without an external tuner. I have no idea why it would do this as it requires alteration to the signal.

* If there's a power outage, or you unplug the TV, you lose all your calibration settings. You'd better write them down somewhere.

* The worst problem is the black levels. Blacks actually glow. There is no shadow detail to speak of. Many video games were unplayable until I cranked them to just not look dark anymore. Kristin Kreuk's hair is just a void in the picture, as is the case for any other dark-haired actor. This really cuts into the benefits of high-def presentation.

"Westinghouse TV died at 21 months" 2009-12-15
By K. OLEARY
I bought a Westinghouse SK-19H210S in February '08. It was an acceptable, modest cost HDTV until it suddenly stopped powering on 21 months after purchase (and very light use during those months). I can't speak with certainty about other models from Westinghouse, but heed my experience!

New it was $330 plus tax. Now it is worthless.

Though well out of its one-year warranty, I thought it worth asking if the company would address the problem (since who would ever pay a nickel for a TV that would die in less than two years). A Westinghouse customer service supervisor said they would only stand by their one-year warranty.

I won't buy a Westinghouse TV again, and you shouldn't buy one in the first place. A tip: Many Visa and MasterCard bank issuers include a one-year warranty extension on products with warranties of three years or less. If your bank offers this benefit, save your itemized original receipt, your card statement, and your warranty terms so that you can make a claim through Visa or MasterCard.

"Decent Quality 42" LCD for under $1,000" 2009-07-11
By Philip (Berkeley, CA, USA)
I bought this TV 1.5 years ago for $900. The design is nice and simple, while the audio and image quality is somewhat mediocre.

"WARNING! Not compatible with all HDMI devices!" 2009-03-05
By Kevin Garcia
Bought this TV and originally had problems with the video signal dropping. I had to go to the Westinghouse website and download a firmware update just to watch anything through the low res RCA jacks. However, the HDMI which is the only way to fully realize HD is an issue that Westinghouse has no plans to resolve! Reps from both Panasonic and Westinghouse told me there is a compatibility issue that renders the port useless. I had previously used the Panasonic Blu Ray player (35) on an insignia with no problems. But at your own risk!

"Great TV but watch what blu ray player you pair with it!" 2009-01-13
By Mr. Michael S. Kelly (Fort Lee, NJ United States)
This is a nice tv for a fair price. Its really nice to see the HD via cable using the HDMI connection. However, when looking for a stand alone blu ray disc player....buyer beware. I purchased the Panasonic BD55 because CNET rated it excellent at hd playback as well as excellent at upconverting regular dvds. Unfortunately I came across a firmware issue - I cannot use the HDMI connection. Panasonic uses a higher version of the HDMI software than the tv does - incompatibility renders my player unable to produce true HD. HUGE BUMMER!!!!!!! Spoke with Panasonic, spoke with Westinghouse. There is no backward compatibility and Westinghouse has no solution in the works for customers. So beware with this company - they say they are providing high end electronics at fair prices but they've gone cheap on the software & essentially tells its customers 'sorry we cant help you'. I dont like that attitude at all. Will make me think twice about recommending this product to anyone - actually thinking about replacing it even though its only several months old. I mean, the whole idea was to get true HD; if I cant get it with the blu ray movies then whats the point?

 "Absolute Junk" 2008-12-26
By T. Johanson (River Falls, WI)
I originally bought this TV at Best Buy, brand new. Within three months I started having problems with the TV not powering on. Then one day after using the sleep timer to turn the TV off, and try and turn it back on a couple of hours later, nothing. Nothing happened, DEAD. After a hastle with Best Buy and warranty return policies they finally gave me a replacement. Now that I have my "new" replacement I'm still unhappy. I now have couple dead pixels (white spots) on the screen, problems with the TV detecting the HDMI input from my Xbox and DVD player, and worst of all it still has the same problems as the first one powering up. I've tried everything they (Westinghouse) suggested; new power outlets, disconnecting the components, and resetting the TV. Nothing. SAVE yourself the money and hassle, DON'T BUY THIS TV. Take it from someone who has experienced the lack of support and garbage quality of this so called TV.

"Excellent TV - Must have HDMI Output" 2008-08-16
By G. Lapidus (Bay Area, California USA)
I own a 60" Sony, and two 32" Sony LCD's. I wanted a small unit in our kitchen to allow us to watch HD Sports, News and programs in that space, where we spend a considerable amount of time, given the size of our family.

In the Bay Area of California, we use Comcast for Cable, and I picked up the Comcast Cable Receiver. At first, I was extremely dissapointed by the volume. The picture was fine, but the volume was so low, I was considering sending the unit back. Then I realized the Comcast unit only had a component video output. I brought it back, and insisted on a Comcast box that had an HDMI output. Once I had a video receiver that allowed me an HDMI output, to go to the Sharp HDMI Input, two changes occurred.

1) Volume increased by 1,000 pecent. Where before the HDMI connection I could barely hear the TV at a volume level of 100, now I don't turn the volume beyond 25%.

2) The picture improved dramatically.

Great TV. Great price. HDMI connection is a must for this unit.

 "Excellent Bedroom Television" 2008-08-04

We're using this TV in the bedroom, and are very happy with it.

There are less expensive LCD TVs in this size, but after the Aquos LC20D42U arrived I didn't regret paying the premium.

The horizontal and vertical viewing angles are excellent, with very little change in color or brightness at extreme angles. Picture quality is very good for both analog and digital tuners.

We've wall-mounted the TV - and while Sharp customer service told me that it doesn't officially recommend removing the table stand, it can be easily removed by taking out a few screws.

A few things that keep me from giving this product 5 stars:

- The digital tuner is slow to change channels. This seems to be a consistent complaint among lots of digital tuners though, in both TVs and DVD recorders.

- Some tasks, such as removing empty channels from the tuner memory, require too many steps to execute.

Although this little TV is a bit costly it is well worth it! I purchased it for the bedroom and the clarity and color are great. This little set delivers perfectly for a smaller room. I am very pleased with my purchase.

 "Great TV" 2008-05-17
By Robert A. White
Everything I wanted - I have two 20" and one 32" of the same TV. I imagine if you were a real TV freak you could find imperfections, but they all work great for me. Worked perfectly (all three) out of the box. There is a start up delay and channel change delay, but that is apparently inherent in this type of TV (have seen the same thing in other brands. All are hooked up to sort of crappy community cable systems and the pictures are great - would imagine a hook up to a dedicated satellite would be outstanding.

"1st smaller LCD with good off-angle viewing vertically!?" 2008-05-13
By basicblur (Virginia)
This is the first (smaller) LCD set I've seen that has a good off-angle view when looking up (first of a new generation of smaller sets with upgraded LCD as found on bigger sets)!

I once got burned by a Toshiba 23HLV87 (off-angle view when looking up was terrible) which I exchanged for a Toshiba 26LV47 (off-angle view is great up/down as well as from the sides). After my experience with the Toshibas, I found that many smaller LCD sets (`bout anything smaller than 26") that look good from the sides (and some looked good from above) have a terrible off-angle view when looking up.

I've wanted to replace my kitchen TV (mounted high) with an LCD, and after a call to Sharp to verify this screen does indeed look good (when looking up), I ordered (the owner manual says the viewing angles are 170 degrees horizontally and VERTICALLY)! This is the first (smaller?) set I've seen with specs that specifically state off-angle viewing angles both horizontally AND vertically, so I assume this is the first generation of smaller sets with an updated LCD screen as found on most 26" and above sets.

I have previous good experience with a well-used Sharp Aquos, so hopefully the quality/performance of this set is just as good.

BTW...if you want to download an owner manual (not listed on Sharp USA site for this model), you can either e-mail Sharp USA customer service and they'll e-mail you one or you can visit Sharp Canada's site. Since Amazon doesn't seem to want to allow me to post an external link, just Google "LC20D42U manual" and the first hit should carry you to a page full of Sharp Canada manuals-they seem to have a much more extensive list of downloadable manuals than Sharp USA.

PROS

First set under 26" I've found that has good off-angle viewing when looking up!

Built-in HDTV tuner: (I have Comcast, and can get about 10 over the air channels through my cable by bypassing the DVR). I have no cable box/DVR in the kitchen, so I should be able to receive channels 1 though 70+ as well as approximately 10 over the air HD channels (based on current experience/HDTVs).

Picture quality: Comparable, if not better, than my Toshiba Regza and old Sharp Aquos.

CONS

No channel labeling!!! (my 26" Toshiba Regza does!) It's much nicer to label each channel rather than remembering what station 105.1 etc is!

Base doesn't swivel (it does tilt)

Sound is a bit on the weak side

Remote not lighted

Remote cannot control other devices!

After living with this TV for a few days, I'm lowering my rating from 4 stars to 3 due to missing features available on my other sets (don't see any way to change the star rating at Amazon)!

If not for size restrictions, I think I'd just get another Toshiba Regza (26LV47, or maybe the model without the built-in DVD player) instead of this Sharp.

The 1 big thing the Toshiba has going for it is channel labeling! It's tough to remember channel 105.1 is ????-would be nice to be able to label each channel with station call letters!

Product Description

Toshiba 42HL67 42" Regza LCD HDTV

Amazon.com Product Description

Toshiba's Regza line of TVs marry state-of-the-art technology to hip design. One feature that sets them apart is PixelPure 14-bit digital video processing, which creates more than 4,000 levels of color gradations for a smooth, natural-looking picture without posterization or image banding. Another benefit is a fast response time. Response time is the interval an LCD screen takes to from its darkest color to its lightest color and back again, measured in milliseconds (ms). This screen's response time is 8 ms, which is at the faster and better end of the spectrum. This screen is likely to display cleaner, sharper images during high-action scenes and with fewer image artifacts than other screens in its class. This technology is housed in a black gloss cabinetry that is sure to fit well with most any decor.

The 42HL67 has a panel resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels. This qualifies it as 720 progressive-line HDTV, which is a noticeably better picture than standard definition sets, but not as detailed as the 1080 HD sets available. Its 16:9 wide screen aspect ratio delivers most movies the way they were meant to be seen in the theater, without back bars wasting the top and bottom of the screen.

The Value of LCD TVs
Aside from their obvious aesthetic value, LCD TVs are much more practical in the home than CRT (tube-style) televisions. They take up a smaller footprint, and thus use up less floor space in the room. Also, LCD TVs are lighter and easier to move around when cleaning or redecorating. The 42HL67 is only 4.89 inches deep and weighs 54 pounds. Best of all, LCD screens use less power than CRTs and plasma screens.

Connections
The set has a built-in digital television tuner, so out of the box it can receive digital broadcast ATSC signals and QAM signals used by most digital cable providers. It also has a built-in 181-channel NTSC tuner, so it can also accept traditional analog signals. It can also make these connections to your audio and video components:

  • HDMI inputs: 3
  • ColorStream HD component video inputs: 2
  • PC monitor input: 1 VGA 15 Pin D-sub
  • S-video input: 1
  • A/V inputs: 2

Audio
The unit's SoundStrip speaker system hides the unit's speakers in a thin strip bordering the screen. They're powerful enough to deliver big stereo sound, but they don't add significantly to the size of the set. Toshiba's StableSound feature maintains television volume within a preset range regardless of the source signal. This is an extremely useful feature when transitioning between a quiet television program and a very loud commercial advertisement or when changing channels. SRS WOW, a combination of SRS 3D, TruBass, and Focus sound-expanding systems, create a 3-D sound field with improved bass response over standard TV audio and create directed, three-dimensional audio sweet spot for maximum enjoyment. The TV also has optical digital output for connecting to your audio system.

42-inch wide screen
A general rule of thumb for selecting the right size television screen is that the screen width--not its 42-inch diagonal measurement--should be between three and five times the optimum viewing distance, such as the distance from the TV screen to where your eyes are while sitting on the couch. Less than that and you may be distracted by the scan lines of the picture. More than that, and you may lose the detail of your TV. Based on this guide, the 42HL67 is ideal for viewing distances of 9.5 to 16 feet.

What's in the Box
42HL67, stand, 4-item universal remote, stand, warranty and product manuals.

 "Awesome LCD TV" 2009-05-24
By N. Martowski (MA)
This is a fantastic TV for both the quality and the money. The 720 actually has a better picture than the 1080. The 1080 blows out the whites quite a bit and didn't have as good deep blacks. It comes with many high-end inputs and the look is great. I would not trade this TV for any of the more expensive ones if someone offered to swap. Frankly, the picture is undeniably sharp and I watch a lot of sports in HD. Let's just say I've really been enjoying the NBA playoffs this year. If anyone is thinking about taking the plunge into the HD world, you can not go wrong with this TV. I'd be happy to respond to any questions but if you go look at this TV and compare, I think you'll be sold.

 "I love it!!!" 2009-02-08
By Valerie B (Portland, OR USA)
What can I say??? I am thoroughly enjoying this HDTV. I too was influenced by the Consumer Reports "Best Buy" tag and picked one of these up at a locally owned area retailer for $999. Installation in my home was delayed while I decided whether to bite the cable bullet or not (I didn't), but since hooking up a $20 Radio Shack antenna have been wowed on a daily basis. The OTA HD picture on this TV is fantastic!

I've got this hooked up to VHS/DVD combo and picture there is awesome as well. Have yet to try HDMI...

Bottom line--fantastic set. I LOVE IT!

"Just an Excellent TV, Beyond It's Price" 2008-04-18
By Evan Hochberg
This TV is absolutely terrific. It's out of box video quality doesn't really need to be adjusted beyond personal preference. Doesn't look the best in store because it's sitting next to 5000$ Samsungs, but once it's home, it's truly incredible. I never thought I'd be able to afford quality like this. Do not hesitate, put away buyers remource and get it. It can be found for $800 plus tax and shipping if you look hard. If you can't find it for less that $1400, it may be better to look at a samsung, but I still can't say enough positive things about this TV.

I'm not big into sound because my apartment is small and I have to keep quiet anyway, so this is the only area where it may be lacking, but it's got so many connections for 5.1, etcc, it doesn't matter.

Please, do yourself a favor. It's way more affordable than it should be. Seems like one of those too-good-to-be-true deals, but it's not.

"My TV has Infant Death Syndrome and Toshiba says 3 months to fix" 2008-04-14
By J. Day (Alabama United States)
The TV itself is great. I purchased it December 2007. Everything was going great and we were enjoying it a lot until the power supply went out in the TV (March 2008). We contacted the store we purchased the TV from and they sent someone out to take a look. After confirming the power supply needed to be replaced they told us that it would be June or July before they could get the parts. The repair company and the store we purchased the TV from both said that having the customer contact Toshiba directly usually results in a better response on getting parts.

We contacted Toshiba directly, they assigned a rep to our problem, and we haven't heard anything back since. Each time we call Toshiba to get an update on the parts for our TV, they tell us that the rep has all the information and will call us back. They refuse to let us speak with the rep they assigned to the case, and they refuse to let us speak with a manager at Toshiba's call .

When asked why it takes so long to get parts for a new model TV, the response from Toshiba was, "Well, we make a lot of TVs and some of these parts come from overseas".

I have had other Toshiba products and been very happy with them, but this experience with their customer service has turned me off of purchasing Toshiba products in the future.

The real kick in the pants... we even purchased the "extended warranty" when we bought the TV and it has done absolutely nothing for us.

The TV is really nice... when it's working but for the last month or so all I've had is a big dead black square hanging over my fireplace.

Something is disturbing is that before purchasing this TV I couldn't find any bad reviews of this TV (a few complaints about the "green problem"). After having the TV for a few months, I see that other people are having the same type of issues with their TVs and getting the same response from Toshiba's customer service department.

If you are getting ready to purchase this TV, I'd wait a few more months to see if any more bad reviews pop up around the Net.

"Excellent LCD for the price, Toshiba all the way!!" 2008-04-01
By Pirate Morgan (Out To Sea)
This is my third Toshiba TV, sold one to make room for this one and still have a 50" Rear Projection that has NEVER given me any trouble eight years running(Knock on wood). For the money -- 42" for $1,019 including S&H from another web site, this is hands down ... THE LCD to get. If your looking for LCD's that is. Good picture quality with standard definition programming despite the poor standard def. signal we get from our cable company. I have seen reviewers complain about this TV's standard definition picture, but you must realize the old addage ... junk in = junk out. No TV can "clear up" a poor signal. Remember also that these TV's are meant to be viewed from a distance, be sure to buy size appropriate for the room as too big means a grainy looking picture. Unbelievable, but in the case of High Def. TV's ... bigger isn't always better a.k.a. size DOES matter!! This sets High Definition picture is incredible ... looks 3D. Don't worry about it being only 720P as cable providers (at least mine) are only feeding 1080i anyways and it fills this screen size nicely with excellent detail. You can count the blades of grass during PGA tournaments or watch the dust flying around each contestant during their post-performance review on American Idol(Somebody needs to dust out there in California!). If you want a High Def. set above 42" in size, you'll want 1080p capability to reduce possible pixelization. I don't have Blue-Ray or the defunct HD-DVD to review but my 480p Progressive DVD player picture is very clean on this TV. If you buy a High Def. TV you ABSOLUTEY need a "High Def. Set-up Disc" such as AVIA, etc. Borrow one from a friend, maybe Netflix rents 'em, or straight up buy one with the coin you saved buying this tv. These DVD's help tune in the picture as most TV's are sent out of the factory with extreme color saturation and brightness (an attempt to stand out from the crowd in the showroom). And you ABSOLUTELY have to somehow get High Def. content running through this TV such as "Over-the-air" rabbit ears, HD cable box, HD satellite box, Blue-Ray player, or the now-defunct HD-DVD player. Not doing so should be listed as one of the seven deadly sins... Failure to provide a high tech., high def., flat screen LCD TV an appropriate signal!!!! PS- Always connect equipment with the highest level connector available to you. Ex- If your cable provider box has an HDMI output ... use it. You'll get the best picture that way. And don't be fooled by "Monster Cables" for HDMI cables (or any other cables for that matter). Unless you have a "Theatre Rooom" and spell and call it such ... you're an average joe or jane like me. That means go to a web reseller (mycablemart, ect.) and buy an HDMI cable for $ instead of $$$$$. A digital signal is either there or it's not, no such thing as "signal degradation" like an analog connection.

As for "problems" other reviewers are having here ... 1)Yes, they're right, these speakers can't handle a lot of bass. My old analog TV couldn't either. They're simply not made for a wide range of acoustic, Not too many TV speakers are.

2) Delay in start up ... read the manual people! States that is a power saving energy star feature that CAN be set off for instant power up.

3)Sluggish remote ... I do have to agree with this one a little, not extreme though. And when sun is glaring toward it (Infrared Radiation) it does have a less of a remote "field of vision". Ehhh, I draw the blinds then and it just makes the picture look that much better ;-)

"Greatest TV next to Sony Bravia" 2008-02-28
By J. LAI (Santa Monica, CA United States)
If you have tons of money to spend, of course get the best in the market - Sony Bravia series. If not, this TV costs a lot less, but has almost as good image quality as those.

I got a 32" Aquos first, then I fell in love with the TV. I realized it was too small. Instead of returning it, I bought another one - this one. It was an excellent decision. Now it sits elegantly in my living room and provides us entertainment every night. I use it to watch HD channels (free ones...if you have an antenna, you can receive many HD channels) and I use it to watch foreign TV shows (I have a slingbox hooked up to the TV in another country). Of course, you need to connect a pc to the TV......

Overall, I love the TV and my family LOVE it too!

 "Awesome TV" 2008-02-25
By M. Osborn (Centralia,WA USA)
Keep in mind this tv is a replacement for a 13 year old 20" panasonic tv/vcr. This Aquos was a replacement for the first one I ordered. I ordered a 32" one but it arrived with a cracked screen (thank you UPS!). I contacted techforless and they said they didnt have the 32" model in stock anymore, so they cut me a deal with this one, which is from the same series. It took over a week to receive the new tv, so if you're in a hurry keep that in mind when getting an order through eagle service. I ended up paying about $900 for it. I have this tv in my bedroom, so it's a little too big. set up was very easy and the picture quality is superb. After hooking up my xbox 360, I couldnt get any sound to come out. This was fixed by purchasing an HDMI cable. Gaming is awesome on this set along with watching dvds. I dont have a Bluray player yet, so I cant comment on how good that will look.

"Had problems but Sharp fixed them..." 2008-01-04
By M. Graves (Andover, NY United States)
I was delighted when I received my new 42" Aquos. Everything I expected and more. Unfortunately after about a week it started to experience the banding that I have read about in other reviews. I called sharp, they asked me to send about 5 or 6 digital pictures of the line and give them a couple of day to review them. Three days later I called them back and spoke with a representative who informed me tje TV was going to be exchanged and upgrade it to the LC-42D64U from the LC-42D62U that I had ordered. Because of the holiday season the shipping took a little longer than I would have liked but received my new TV in about two weeks. I was very impressed that they were so helpful and that my TV was replaced. I would not hesitate buying anything else from them.

 "Horrible tv" 2007-12-21
By Timeless
Since we bought this tv, we have had nothing but problems with it and with Sharp. During the first month, we returned it to the store due to a banding issue. During the second month, we called the company to use the warranty to return it again due to the same banding issue. They sent us a new tv which came with yet another banding issue and dark vertical lines that looked like a burn in. We called the company to use the warranty again and they decided to send us the new model(64U), which we just received. This is our 4th tv which is not a new one, but a refurbished one, that came without the correct mounting screws and without a power cord. The only thing Sharp said they could do for us was send us the cord & screws, so in the meantime we are left without a tv.

 "What a TV!! Sharp Aquos 42"" 2007-11-12
By Uday kumar
We were planning to buy an HDTV for sometime now. My wife did a whole lot of research and we zeroed in on Sharp. Good brand, great looking TV and not as pricey as a Sony...

We have an apartment and the initial few movies took us time to get used to...then we started loving it.

A friend of ours came over and recommended that we need to get a HDMI cable. we got the cable and man what a difference!!!

The picture quality on DVD's is just awesome...I tell you this is a great TV and we love it...we bought it directly at TigerDirect..great site...good service and no complaints...

PS: Dont waste too much time in research....Sony, Sharp and Samsung should be your final three

"All That Glitters IS NOT GOLD!!" 2009-12-06
By John A. Bertels (Cortlandt Manor, NY United States)
I have owned this particular model for slightly over two years. All of a sudden, out of nowhere, the TV powered down while I was watching it and will not power back on successfully. The power light flashes in patterns of 7, which indicates an error code due to failure of the power unit/board and/or voltage regulator.

I have seen hundreds of similar complaints about Panasonic TVs manufactured in the same time period that cease operating after two years, all due to the same problems. Panasonic refuses to acknowledge responsibility for said condition and projected repair costs are at or near half of the cost of this unit.

True while it was operational that the product offered a nice picture and sound but two years in this day and age is unacceptable for the life of a television unit.

Thumbs down on this one.

"Death by Blinking Light 10 times, self solution" 2009-03-25
By Jason M. Bussanich (Portland, OR)
I have had the 42" pz80u for 8 months. I just started using DVI > HDMI cable on the back HDMI port and after a few weeks the tv won't turn on. 10 blinks of the power light was my only clue. Service guy via chat told me the front HDMI port is designated for computers only. Back ports MUST be HDMI to HDMI devices, e.g. DVD players, appletv or whatever. In fact, if you go DVI > HDMI then use an extender cable HDMI > HDMI inbetween your computer and the TV and still use the back port, you should be good to go without this issue. Please note: Other blinking light issues are different problems. I believe this is just for 10 blinks. Not 7 and not twelve. good luck. Otherwise, this has been a very quality set. Controls are easy, ports are easy and picture is excellent and I should know for how much I researched this crap.

I simply love it! HD TVs are awsome!

If the closed captions could function while using the HD feed (for regular TV or cable, not DVD or other feed like this) this TV would be perfect.I think this is because this technology stills developing.

If you are one of those who don't really mind the CC's not coming up on you TV, then is the perfect TV for you!

 "AWESOME TV" 2008-04-02
By L. A. Jones (San Antonio, TX USA)
This TV has far exceeded our expectations! The picture quality is excellent...esp. with an HDMI cable. I definitely don't feel anything is lacking since this is 'only' 720p. I can't see how the picture could be any better! The sound quality is superb as well, even when not running it thru the home theater system. And, even though this model does not feature an anti-glare or anti-reflective filter/screen like the updated model does, it poses no problems. We have a wall of windows, and once the TV is on, you can't notice the glare, except for on the bezel.

All in all, this was a great purchase, esp. for under $1000. It is definitely worth the money. Oh, and the white glove delivery was great, too.
